The 2021-22 NHL season continues with three games on Wednesday night’s card, so we’re breaking down this interconference showdown from Gila River Arena in Glendale to get you the best Rangers vs. Coyotes betting pick and odds.
New York meets Arizona for the first time since October 2019. The Rangers opened as -222 road favorites on WynnBet Sportsbook, while the Kings are +180 underdogs with a total of 5.5 goals. The Coyotes have won the last three contests between these teams, but New York holds a 7-1-2 edge in the last 10 meetings.
Rangers Look to Rebound
The New York Rangers (18-7-3) are finishing off a short trip out West that saw the team lose to Colorado on Tuesday 4-2. After facing Arizona, they will return home for the next four contests. The Rangers have been impressive away from Madison Square Garden, going 10-4-2 this season and they are 7-3-0 in their last 10.
The loss to Colorado was a tough one, as the Avalanche scored the first two goals of the contest before hanging on for a 4-2 victory. Ryan Strome and Julien Gauthier scored for the Rangers. With Igor Shesterkin out, Alexandar Georgiev was back in net, stopping 27 of 31 shots.
New York has been a solid defensive club, ranked sixth in the NHL in goals allowed per game at 2.57. Opponents are connecting on 8.1% of their shots, fifth overall and the team has a .919 save percentage, also fifth in the NHL. Special teams have been a difference for this team as well, as they are eighth on the power-play at (23.5%) and sixth in penalty killing (83.7%).
Coyotes Look to End Skid
The Arizona Coyotes (5-20-2) have lost their last five games, and have struggled at home as well. Arizona has lost five straight games at home and they are 1-6-1 in their last eight games at Gila River Arena. The good news is that this team heads to the road for three contests starting on Friday where they have been slightly better.
The Coyotes were tied with the Flyers at two last Saturday, but Philadelphia responded with three unanswered goals to earn a 5-3 victory. Nick Schmaltz had a goal and an assist for Arizona and Cam Dineen added two assists. Karel Vejmelka had a tough evening, stopping 29 of 34 shots.
Arizona is a team that is a complete mess. They are last in goals per game (1.78) and last in goals allowed per game (3.67). That means that they are giving up twice as many goals as scoring on average. The team is last in shooting percentage (7.0%), 31st on the power-play at (12.1%) and 29th in penalty killing (71.9%). It is not surprising this team has the worst record in the NHL.
Trends:
New York:
- 4-1 in their last five games on the road.
- 12-4 in their last 16 games.
Arizona:
- 3-15 in their last 18 games at home.
- 17-41 in their last 58 games.
New York Rangers vs. Arizona Coyotes Pick
With Georgiev in net, New York is not nearly as imposing. At least it would seem that way. He did give up four goals to Colorado, but allowed six total goals in his previous five appearances. He gives the Rangers another big advantage in this contest, as if they needed one.
There is honestly nothing to like about Arizona. They rank in the bottom four in every major category statistically. When you can’t score goals and you can’t keep opponents from scoring, it is going to be a long season.
Pick: Take New York Rangers at -222
The Total:
With Arizona struggling to keep opponents from scoring, it would seem that the over is the smart pick. However, the Coyotes simply cannot score goals, putting in 10 in their last seven games. In four of those contests, they were held to a single goal. In fact, in the last three victories for the Coyotes, they scored two goals in two of those contests and a single goal in the third.
New York has been held to four goals over their last three games. The Rangers have gone under in six of their last eight games while the Coyotes have gone under in five of their last seven against teams from the Eastern Conference.
Pick: Go under 5.5 goals at +105
