Under normal circumstances, it’s hard to get too excited about a 32-39-8-3 record. However, this is a reason to celebrate if you are a Sabres backer. After all, Buffalo has not secured a playoff spot since 2010-11 when they put together a 96-point campaign. Since then, they have been perennial cellar dwellers and the butt of many a cruel joke.

Buffalo was pretty bad in 2021-22, but they weren’t terrible. Still, this is a team that will have to work very hard if they want to avoid finishing below the .500 mark for the 10th consecutive year. They don’t just need to improve in one or two areas to achieve this. The Sabres need to get much better at both ends of the ice and on special teams if they are to rise above the riff-raff.

Following a 75-point regular season in 2021-22, the bookmakers have set Buffalo’s 2022-23 point total at 78.5. So, they think Buffalo will be better, but not much better. Only Arizona, Chicago, Montreal, Philadelphia, and San Jose project to be worse this season.

Perhaps one bright spot can be found in how the Sabres ended their 2021-22 NHL season. They won six of their last eight games which included a season-high 4-game winning streak. Of course, we cannot forget about those multiple 4+-game losing streaks that plagued Buffalo’s last campaign. Don’t be fooled by the low projected point total. The Sabres will be hard-pressed to surpass it. Here are the projections for the top 8 Eastern Conference teams and their respective point totals.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs 107.5
  • Florida Panthers 104.5
  • Carolina Hurricanes 103.5
  • Tampa Bay Lightning 103.5
  • Pittsburgh Penguins 101.5
  • New York Rangers 99.5
  • Boston Bruins 95.5
  • Washington Capitals 93.5

If the Sabres do in fact make into the postseason, which they probably won’t, it will most likely be as a wildcard team. With the likes of Florida, Toronto, Tampa, and Boston in the mix, a division title seems like a pipe dream. We must also consider that Ottawa and Detroit appear to be improved this year which makes things even tougher. Sure, the idea of a 70 to 1 payout is enticing, but Buffalo simply doesn’t have the horses to turn things around so dramatically.  Here are the odds to win the Atlantic Division.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs +170
  • Florida Panthers +200
  • Tampa Bay Lightning +300
  • Boston Bruins +1100
  • Ottawa Senators +2800
  • Detroit Red Wings +3000
  • Buffalo Sabres +7000
  • Montreal Canadiens +20000

If you are looking to donate a few bucks to your bookmaker, then wagering on the Sabres to win the Eastern Conference is the bet for you. Even at +5000, this particular pick has very little, if any value. The Sabres might be able to compete with the other projected cellar dwellers like Philly, Montreal, and Columbus, but asking them to come out of the regular season ahead of Eastern Conference powerhouses like Toronto, Florida, Carolina, and Tampa Bay is simply asking way too much. Heck, keeping pace with the Islanders, Devils, and Red Wings would be a major overachievement. Save your money. There’s much better value to be found among Buffalo’s Eastern Conference rivals.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs +400
  • Florida Panthers +500
  • Carolina Hurricanes +550
  • Tampa Bay Lightning +600
  • New York Rangers +1000
  • Pittsburgh Penguins +1000
  • Boston Bruins +1200
  • Washington Capitals +1800
  • New York Islanders +2000
  • New Jersey Devils +2200
  • Ottawa Senators +2800
  • Detroit Red Wings +3000
  • Columbus Blue Jackets +5000
  • Buffalo Sabres +5500
  • Philadelphia Flyers +10000
  • Montreal Canadiens +10000

Yes. Anything can happen once the NHL playoffs begin. But here’s the thing: You actually have to make the post-season first. This is something that the Sabres have failed to do since 2011. Even though the Sabres will eventually break that streak, there are no reasons to believe that it will happen this season. Buffalo needs to get a lot better before they can even think about making the post-season let alone winning the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship.
