The 2022 MLB continues with a 13-game Thursday card, bringing plenty of interesting markets to choose from, so we’re taking a closer look at the AL East showdown from Yankee Stadium in New York to get you the best Orioles vs. Yankees betting pick and odds.
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Yankees are heavy -225 home favorites. The Orioles sit at +204 moneyline odds, while the totals are listed at 8.0 runs.
The O’s battled bravely in Tuesday’s opener
Wednesday night’s contests have been excluded from the analysis, and the 6-11 Baltimore Orioles were looking to bounce back from a 12-8 defeat in the opening clash of this set on Tuesday night. Jordan Lyles yielded six earned runs across 4.2 innings of work, while the Orioles’ lineup put on a fight, scoring eight runs against one of the best pitching corps in the majors.
The O’s have scored only 52 runs in their first 17 games of the 2022 season. They’ve registered the fourth-worst OPS in the majors (.603). On the pitching side of things, the Orioles have recorded a 3.73 ERA (18th in the MLB), 1.31 WHIP (23rd), and .242 batting average against (24th).
Bruce Zimmermann (1-0; 1.20 ERA) will toe the slab Thursday, aiming for another strong display. The 27-year-old southpaw has allowed only a couple of earned runs through his first three starts and 15 innings of work in 2022. He met the Yanks on April 17, pitching five scoreless frames in a 5-0 victory, but Zimmermann had to settle down for a no-decision.
The Yankees clubbed five home runs in the opener
The New York Yankees improved to 11-6 on the season following that 12-8 victory over the Orioles, extending their winning streak to four games. Just a couple of days after a 10-2 thrashing of the Cleveland Guardians, the Yanks put on another strong offensive performance, slugging five home runs and a pair of extra-base hits.
While Joey Gallo and Aaron Judge went yard once, Anthony Rizzo enjoyed his first three-homer game. Rizzo has already accounted for eight dingers and 18 RBIs, slashing .283/.411/.733 in the process.
Jameson Taillon will toe the rubber Thursday, and the 30-year-old right-hander has done a good job through his first three starts in 2022. Taillon is 1-1 with a 3.07 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 13/1 K/BB ratio across 14.2 frames of work. He got a no-decision in a 5-2 victory at Baltimore on April 16, tossing 4.2 innings of a two-run ball.
Trends:
Baltimore:
- 4-16 in the last 20 road games against the Yankees
- 3-8 in the last 11 outings away from home
NY Yankees:
- 6-1 in the last seven games overall
- 6-1 in the last seven contests at home
Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees Pick
The Yankees struggled in their first meeting of the season with Bruce Zimmermann, but they still own a good record against the Orioles’ lefty. The current Yanks are hitting .278/.346/.503 with three home runs in 41 at-bats against Zimmermann, and I’m expecting to see a much better performance this time around.
On the other side, the current Orioles are only 9-for-42 with a .645 OPS against Jameson Taillon, though they took the Yankees’ righty deep four times. If they want to upset the odds at Yankee Stadium, the Orioles will need to perform at a high level on both sides of the ball, and their pitching staff will be under huge pressure. The Yanks are hitting .292/.346/.548 in their last five outings.
Pick: Take New York Yankees -1.5 at -105
The Total:
Both bullpens have struggled a lot over the last seven days, so we could see eight or more runs in this game. The Orioles have recorded a 4.50 ERA and 4.54 FIP, while the Yankees have registered a 6.00 ERA, 3.63 FIP, and a .347 BABIP.
As I’ve mentioned above, the Yankees’ offense has mashed the ball over its last five contests, posting the best OPS in the majors. On the other side, the Orioles have slashed .222/.304/.341 in their previous five outings.
Pick: Go over 8.0 runs at -110
