The Jets Take Down the Giants in the Battle of New York

August 16th, 2021 By: Patrick Ryan

Zach Wilson starred in the Jets’ preseason victory over the Giants.  Wilson, the number two overall pick in this past NFL draft, was highly efficient in his first-ever professional start.  Wilson went 6 of 9 for 63 yards.  Though Wilson’s success came against the Giants’ backup players, it was notable as the quarterback has more doubters than most would expect for a number two overall pick.

MetLife Stadium is Returning to Normal

Football fans returned to MetLife Stadium en masse for the first time since the final week of 2019.  The COVID pandemic has prevented NFL-lovers from taking in the action in-person.  Unfortunately, local football fans did not get a chance to see Daniel Jones on the field.  Rather, the Giants started journeyman quarterback Mike Glennon.

Glennon, a career backup, has played for half a dozen NFL teams.  The veteran QB completed three of seven passes, totaling 20 yards.  Clayton Thorson replaced Glennon after the first quarter.  It must be noted Glennon’s final series culminated in a lost fumble by the goal line.  Glennon had one decent drive during his time on the field.

Thorson stole the spotlight, launching a nice 21-yard TD pass to Damion Willis following a turnover.    Thorson ended up leaving the game with less than two minutes remaining after an end zone sack.  Joe Judge did not provide an updated on Thorson’s condition.

Game Notes

Sandro Platzgummer, an Austrian attempting to make the Giants’ roster as a running back, certainly gave fans their money’s worth in the game against the Jets.  The running back who spent the prior season in the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, recorded the game’s longest play with a nearly 50-yard run in the closing quarter.  Jets’ defensive linemen Jabari Zuniga and Michael Dwumfour both left the game with knee and calf injuries, respectively.

Jets’ running back Tevin Coleman sat out the game for what Robert Saleh describes as personal reasons.  It is also disappointing that Elijah Moore and Alijah Vera-Tucker, both of whom were high draft picks in this past draft, did not play due to injuries.  The Jets are now scheduled to head to Green Bay for a couple joint practices ahead of a matchup with the Packers on Saturday.  The Giants shift their attention to the Browns.  The two squads will engage in combined practices and do battle on the gridiron this upcoming Sunday.
